History of Launceston Airport

When the Tasmanian Aero Club was established there in 1927, the construction of Tasmania's first airport began. Western Junction Aerodrome opened to the public in 1930 after being formally dedicated the year before.

Nearly 20,000 people crowded onto Evandale Road in February 1931 to see Colonel Brinsmead, the Controller of Civil Aviation, formally establish Western Junction as a government airfield. To reach Flinders Island, small planes took off from Launceston that year.

The airport was home to the No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School of the Royal Australian Air Force from August 1940 until late 1944. In Tasmania, it was the only RAAF base there. The airport still has two original Bellman hangars from this era, which can be found in the south Freight and GA operations area.

With Tony John at the helm, a plan for a significant airport overhaul was authorized in 1962. All pavements were fortified, a runway was lengthened, and a new terminal was constructed. In that same year, it reopened at Launceston Airport.

To accommodate the larger Boeing 767s, the runway was expanded in October 1982. Airport privatization occurred in 1998, and current owners include Launceston City Council and Australia Pacific Airports Corporation.
