History of Sunshine Coast Airport

In 1958, the Queensland government gave the Maroochy Shire Council some property to use as a general aviation airport. On August 16, 1959, a test landing was conducted on a grass runway. Initially, the airstrip was utilized by the Maroochy Aero Club and the Queensland Parachute Club.

The Maroochy Shire Council opened a 1,400-meter paved runway on August 12, 1961; it could accommodate planes as large as a Fokker F27 Friendship. The airstrip was rebranded as Maroochydore Airport once scheduled public transportation began using the facility. In 1974, lights were installed so landings could be made at night.

In 1979, a new terminal building was built. In 1983, the runway was lengthened to its current length of 1,797 meters so that regional jets like the Fokker F28 Fellowship and the BAe 146 could use it. In 1993, improvements were made to the runway so that larger planes like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 could use it. When the airport's new terminal opened in 1997, the location officially became known as Sunshine Coast Airport.

The new runway officially opened on June 14, 2020. The northern portion of the airport's north-south runway (1797 meters) was demolished, while the southern part was converted into a taxiway. Long-haul, wide-body jets are acceptable for the new runway.
